Susan O. Margolius

Born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Norfolk, Sue has traveled all over Europe and lived in Japan, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Her formal schooling includes the Charles E. Ellis School in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, SUNY Buffalo, University of Rochester, Old Dominion University in Norfolk, and The Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, (BFA degree in painting and printmaking).

She also attended classes at the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Tokyo (Advanced Teaching Certificate), Chrysler Museum School (pottery), New York School of Interior Design, Art Students League of New York City, and the Van Polen School of Pastel Portraiture in the Netherlands. She is a trained Cub, Boy, and Explorer Scout Leader as well as a Cub Scout Woodbadge Training graduate.

Sue has experience in many artistic media, including acrylics, oils, watercolors, pastels, etching, lithography, woodcut, silk screen, pencil and charcoal, hand-thrown and built pottery, Japanese flower arranging, photography, bead work, and quilting.

Recently she has channeled her artistic talents by integrating her consummate skills into digital mixed media art on a Macintosh computer, sometimes using a graphics tablet, scanner, and digital photography. The results present a unique image of vivid free-flowing expressionism which takes advantages of the best of computer art. Thus, she demonstrates the blending of traditional printmaking into the modern world of the digital medium.

For more than 40 years, Sue has trained and lived the artistic life, imparting her talents to other students around the world and supporting her Army husband through 25 different moves while raising their two sons .

Sue has exhibited in a number of one-person shows in the United States and abroad and has won numerous prizes for her unusual work, including awards in pastels from the Wiesbaden (Germany) Die Roemer Gallery, and quilting from the Wiesbaden Fine Arts Gallery. She has original works of art in permanent collections at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Virginia and the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tampa, Florida. Currently, her work is on display and for sale at Gallery 41, Owego, New York, the Mekong Restaurant, Vestal, New York, The Hospital in Sidney, New York, and Sea Hag Soaps and Mercantile in Brackney, Pennsylvania. Recently, she was selected as one of 300 contributing artists from 10 different countries to sell her work from Art-o-mat, retired cigarette vending machines around the United States.

Some of her more interesting jobs throughout the years include:

1995-Present: Volunteer work at the Historic Silver Lake Presbyterian Church—Brackney, Pennsylvania and board member of the Macintosh Southern Tier Apple Club (MacSTAC) in Vestal, New York.

1994-1995: Preschool Teacher—Assistant, First Baptist Church—O'Fallon, Illinois
Helped to plan and provide quality supervision, attention, and love for twelve children, approximately two years old. Responsible for ensuring their safety, and mental stimulation.

1989-1993: Art Instructor—O'Fallon, Illinois
Tutored art lessons (drawing, pastel, watercolor, art history, and perspective) using self-designed individually-tailored curriculum geared to individual student needs and abilities.

1985-1988: Social Director—Wiesbaden, Germany
Provided guidance, assistance, counseling, enlightenment, cultural enrichment, and advice to wives and girlfriends of husband's office staff. Assisted with problem children.

1983-1985: Assistant Organizer, English—speaking Help Service - The Hague, The Netherlands
Co-founded the Help Service to assist English—speaking residents assimilate and integrate into a foreign culture and environment, including obtaining medical care.

1976-1979: Flower Arranging Instructor—Fort Leavenworth, Kansas
Provided home-based instruction in the Sogetsu Ikebana method of flower arranging to various officer's wives groups, including private lessons.

1974-1976: English Teacher, Okinawa English Center—Okinawa, Japan

1971-1972: Gift Shop Volunteer Display Manager and Procurer of Local On-commission Art Objects, Chrysler Museum of Art—Norfolk, Virginia

1967-1968: Art Librarian, Old Dominion University —Norfolk, Virginia
Served as Art Librarian and secretary to the Art Department Chairman.

Her hobbies include gardening, reading, sewing, and volunteer work.

Artist's Statement: As I think back to my 40 years of art experience, I realize more and more that art for me, is a challenge of exploration and discovery. The act of doing it is infinitely fascinating. Each little change makes me want to discover more. I am extremely excited about the unlimited capabilities of the digital art form, particularly in how it translates from traditional printmaking techniques into a new art form.
